Car insurance for 1 day
Normally the best way to source car insurance is simply to surf a few insurance comparison sites but there are occassions where your normal insurance company or broker may not be able to help. These unusual cirumstances may include borrowing a friend or family members car for a journey, or taking an extended test drive a prestige or sporty vehicle or even if you have just bought a vehicle at auction or dealership and need one day car insurance to get it home safely and legally!

Nowadays its actually pretty easy to get car insurance for 1 day or even cover for anything from 1 to 28 days for almost any purpose. However for particular models, such as those cars in high insurance groups, drivers usually have to be be aged 25 or over with most short term insurance companies, additionly excess for young drivers up to 24 can be high ( frequently around £750 - £1000 for a high performance models such as Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru Impreza or Nissan Skyline). However, even though the excess can be high the actual premiums themselves are quite cheap, this allows you to get comprehensive 1 day car insurance cover for another person to drive your car, a temporary additional vehicle for any reason, a newly bought vehicle from an auction or car supermarket, a courtesy car, an unaccompanied test-drive of an expensive car(some dealerships offer 24-48 hour test drives but will insist on you purchasing insurance for the duration of the test drive) or even for track day driving or other racing events not covered on your existing policy!

Single day car insurance

This type of cover has been specially designed to meet the needs of people who need short term insurance to drive in the UK and to cover them for a period of anything between 1 to 28 days against accident, fire or theft damage to their vehicle, as well as third party insurance protection. However, as with any insurance cover, it is vital to read the small print and not to make any assumptions. Most insurers will have some exclusions to the temporary cover, for example:-

  • Vehicles must be registered in the UK ( i.e. no grey imports)
  • Many insurers have a maximum current market value of less than £25,000-£40,000 - so no brand new Porsche or Ferraris!
  • Must not be used for the carriage of goods or passengers for hire or reward (including Taxicabs, Private Hire and Public Hire)
  • Single day car insurance policies generally do not cover hired vehicles

One day car insurance cover
It can actually work out cheaper in certain circumstances to arrange one day car insurance rather than a more conventional annual insurance plan then cancel when no longer required, as many insurance companies will levy a cancellation charge, typically £30-50. Obviously there is no point in any case paying an annual premium for a vehicle you only plan to drive once or use every now and then. Single day insurance was originally limited to the motor trade only, particularly car dealerships, but this type of temporary cover was actually introduced to the general public way back in 2005, though is still relatively unknown and not well catered for by the high street insurers.
